Cambridge Histories Now Online
ELAINE GOETTLERThe acclaimed texts of the Cambridge Histories Series are now available online to the University of Toronto academic community. This reference set traces its publication heritage to 1902 with the release of the Cambridge Modern History, closely followed by Cambridge Histories of English Literature, Medieval History, Ancient History and the British Empire. Regional Histories (China, Japan, Africa, Latin America, Islam and Iran) were added and the collection grew further to include Cambridge Economic Histories, Political Thought, Literature and Philosophy. Today the set covers 15 academic subjects, has more than 250 volumes and continues to grow each year.
In the past, this unique historical compendium has required users to consult numerous print volumes and indexes in libraries throughout the world. Now there is online access 24-7 and enhanced usability to meet research needs and to introduce students to this renowned collection. The material on the Cambridge Histories Online (CHO) site exists in portable document format (PDF), which ensures a look that matches the printed originals and contains all the page layout information, fonts, tables, pictures, equations and more.
Using basic and advanced search functionality and content-specific browsing, readers can search and browse content of the entire collection or focus on a specific volume. The "My Histories" section allows researchers to create a personalized collection and password protected pages within the collection, enabling them to run recent searches, save searches, bookmark chapters of special interest and create personal notes with each chapter. Saved work can be shared with other CHO users and the environment supports the establishment of workgroups for the exchange of research-related information.
Cambridge Histories Online is continually updated with new volumes from the print series as soon as they become available. If you have questions about the features of the collection, please contact your Liaison Librarian.
