At the heart of any great institution of higher learning are the two life-sustaining, vital principles of Knowledge Creation, and Knowledge Sharing. They push us to strive for excellence, for innovation, and for engagement, not only with our students and peers, but with the local and global communities.
Creating Knowledge
I'm very pleased to report that core research revenue has been rising steadily at U of T Mississauga since the inception of the Vice-Principal: Research portfolio in 03-04, and is now 65% higher than in 00-01. Research revenue figures and active research award counts are easily quantifiable, and as such play a prominent role in the 2006-07 Research Report, yet this data can only scratch the surface and offer a glimpse into the dynamic ways that knowledge is being created on our campus by our world-class faculty, students, and staff.
Sharing Knowledge
It is in sharing knowledge that great scholars make their mark. Dissemination happens in many ways, including the traditional academic venues of teaching and publishing, and more innovative and modern methods such as collaborating with government and industry, and engaging directly with the community to assist local organizations achieve their goals and missions. It is here, through all aspects of sharing knowledge, that U of T Mississauga is truly leading the pack, both at the University of Toronto, but also nationally, and internationally. It is an accomplishment of which we should all be tremendously proud.
Dynamic Interplay Between Creation & Sharing
I am proud to report that the natural state of research engagement at U of T Mississauga is one in which through creating knowledge we share, and through sharing knowledge we create. We have successfully capitalized on this dynamic interplay of creation and sharing, and are beginning to reap the rewards of this synergy through a number of impressive ventures.
In the recently announced Forensics Science Institute, the Ontario Centre of Forensic Sciences, the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario and U of T Mississauga have each committed to enhance the research in, the training in, and the public awareness of, forensic science in Ontario. This institute will be the only one of its kind in Canada, and will be internationally leading in terms of quality and scope.
U of T Mississauga is also fully engaged in participating in the Research Innovation Commercialization Centre. This partnership of industry, academia and government which is led by U of T Mississauga and provides technical and scientific services, professional business services, and networking programs for the Western GTA. The Convergence Centre has established an imaging centre at U of T Mississauga to provide the capability for high resolution 3-dimensional optical imaging in the Arius 3 D Imaging Laboratory, which will assist those who have aspirations to jump ahead of the competition in terms of building on-line catalogue resources, who face difficulties in curation of unique physical and biological specimens, and who strive to solve manufacturing and engineering problems.
The Healthy Cities Stewardship Centre is yet another initiative in which U of T Mississauga faculty have captured the synergy of engagement outside the traditional boundaries of academia. Aimed at bettering the health of the people of Mississauga, this is a collaboration between U of T Mississauga, the City of Mississauga, and 13 key local organizations which have come together to collectively work towards understanding and improving health through four key themes: healthy people; healthy ecosystems; effective social systems; and integrated communities.
Research & Graduate Office
As we move forward into 07-08, I have no doubt that our unbridled enthusiasm for engaged research through knowledge creation and knowledge sharing will continue to thrive.
These are exciting times for those who wish to tackle the challenge of pursuing exciting new ideas. There is a sense of optimism, buoyed in an environment of local, provincial and national growth. The Research Office is pleased to serve in a facilitation role to help colleagues achieve their aspirations, and to help colleagues develop and implement broad strategic visions at U of T Mississauga.
We look forward to working with you!
